Manna from Heaven! This breakfast & lunch spot on Forest Hill Ave is frequently mentioned and lauded by the foodies on EatGR, so it was an easy choice for a friendly Sunday meet-up with pals. We arrived at 9 am to beat the church rush and actually walked in while the staff was (ostensibly) finishing up their a.m. meeting in the back of the house. My bold and brazen companion was able to get an employee's attention, and several other waitstaff filed out to begin seating and service. After that little hiccup, our service was prompt, warm, and attentive. I have never had more frequent coffee service. They must do a brisk business with the sort of folks that balk at a 1/2 empty cup because the servers were ON POINT with the coffee. It bordered on absurd, but better to be too on the ball than the alternative. Portions were near perfect, as were prices, for the elevated breakfast offerings that have their roots in typical diner fare, but at Manna are executed with care and finesse. I opted for a sweet breakfast--I am usually #teamsavory--and ordered the Cinnamon Bread French Toast. Simply delicious, with a gooey, spicy cinnamon swirl baked right into the bread. I would definitely order it again, next time with the sweet/spicy bacon I for unknown reasons resisted ordering. Manna Cafe has a small patio for outdoor seating and the clean, bright interior is inviting and filled with gorgeous natural light which I love for a breakfast place. I look forward to returning to sample their lunch menu offerings, beginning at 11 am. So, I would be remiss to neglect to mention the cafe's overarching theme and principles of Christianity and the celebration of "God's creation and goodness" (taken from their site's mission statement.) They also add: "Every customer is welcome, valued and appreciated!" As a customer, I simply enjoyed my delicious meal and took note of the biblical quote on the far wall. No proselytizing whatsoever.

Stopped here on the way up north. Easy on, easy off I-96. We both had the Manna Hash ($11) with eggs, corned beef, bacon, potatoes, onions and hollandaise sauce. Also order of rye toast ($4). Good, not great. Kinda blah. Service is great. Toast was cold and burnt. Corned beef is cut up into big chunks, first bite was all fat. The rest of the corned beef was ok but had a strange smoky flavor. Bacon is fine but this dish doesn't need it. Hollandaise sauce lacks flavor. Not even a hit of lemon and definitely no cayenne pepper--traditional recipe. Potatoes are chunky and the best part of the breakfast but could use some paprika or pepper. Would we go back? Nah

Well.... Not all restaurants are winners unfortunately. I came here for an early lunch and was stoked to have some waffles. After placing my order and waiting for about 30 mins, the manager came out and explained that a layer of rust from the waffle maker kept flaking off into the waffle they were trying to make for me... Gross... I was told it would be only a few more mins while they switch out the maker. In the mean time the waiter brought out the side order of bacon I had ordered with the waffle (umm isn't this supposed to be a SIDE ORDER and not an appetizer?). After waiting another 20 mins (!!!) the waiter finally brought out the waffle which turned out to be nothing special. Luckily the manager comped the entire meal without me evening having to ask (about $12 value) which is why I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1.

I LOVE this place! It's very well organized and has the best breakfast. I think they do a great job on the menu and specials. When I went, I had the amazing pumpkin waffles. They were so good that it made me want to go back the next day! I think this is one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time!

Manna Cafe only opened a couple of weeks ago, so I figured I'd take the family in for a late breakfast/early lunch. Was surprised to see it is more upscale service than I expected...sit down service, although there is a small counter as well. Breakfast is served all the time and lunch is added after 11 a.m. The food was delicious, but in have to say I was concerned once I noted everything was ordered a la carte....and it added up fast. $6 for pancakes (one very large pancake, but still...) and then $3-4 for a side of sausage or bacon. $10 for pancakes and bacon? The frittatas and omelets seemed to be a better value, but not by much. Again, the food was fresh and good, but I'm always surprised when a new restaurant doesn't offer lower prices in the first couple of months to at least get people in and hooked. I doubt there will be a lot of regular return business at these prices...it may become a special, once a month type of treat for us...if that. One other note...a table for 4 people should actually hold 4 of your regular plates. That's just bad planning.

Comfortable, welcoming atmosphere! Great, hot coffee! Delicious, fresh, flavorful food! We will be back!!

I've been here several times and always had great food, good service, and no wait for a table. My favorite is the Manna Hash but there are many other tasty things. The decor is cute and you can tell they have put a lot of thought into each dish that they serve.

Eggs tasted like dry powdered eggs...very rubbery. The rest of the food was just bland. Service was very poor considering the price.

Went here this morning for brunch. Awesome service and the food is exceptional! We will absolutely go back. Husband had the Jamaican pork eggs benedict and pancake. Both awesome and fresh. I had the Manna blt which has fried green tomatoes and the turkey cranberry boursin soup. Very tasty. Best part was the end when they give you coffee to go lol

We happened upon Manna Cafe this morning while out and about. The service was excellent and the food delish! I know other reviewers have complained about pricing, but I think for homemade bread, biscuits and english muffins, house smoked meats, locally sourced produce and scratch made hollandaise and gravy, one should be willing to pay a slightly higher pricepoint. My bill for coffee and excellent biscuits and gravy was just $10.50. Well worth it!

Food was simple and good. Nothing incredible. Very slow service and slightly weird. Everything just seemed "off" a little bit. Can't put my finger on it but just something off.

Food was ok, nothing too crazy. I ordered the Manna Hash and found that the hash was a bit overcooked. Actually it was burnt. I had to pick out my ham and bacon pieces from the burnt potatoes and onions. Eggs were cooked fine. I also ordered the stuffed french toast, and that was actually quite tasty. Had a nice crunch to it. Other than that, nothing was too memorable. The restaurant was clean, and the service was great. Would I be back? Eh, maybe. I've had bigger portions and better food at other breakfast places in GR, but the wait time to be seated here is more reasonable than other places. Definitely worth giving this place a shot. I might be back to try something else on the menu besides breakfast.

A decent breakfast option in GR. I would recommend getting there before the church crowd mobs the place, though. The place has a fairly large indoor seating area and a small outdoor seating area. The ambient noise level inside isn't quite that of a football stadium during the Super Bowl, but it's pretty loud. The service is friendly and prompt despite how busy it typically is and the portions are generous. The food quality is decent and the prices are reasonable. I got the "Manna Hash" today and found the corned beef to be a little on the dry side and halfway between tender and tough. Overall, a fair breakfast for $11. I also got the "Stuffed French Toast" on the pretense that I wanted the wife and kids to try it out. My kid declined a bite and my wife had one bite, which was fine by me. The outside of the toast was crispy and the filling was a slightly bland berry and cream cheese compote which definitely benefited from some maple syrup. The juice was good but did not seem fresh-squeezed. I didn't really notice the evangelical writings on the wall until they were pointed out to me and the waitstaff did not try to baptize me or anything, so I wasn't put off by the vibe. The biggest letdown was actually the kid meals. They seemed of less than average quality. Also, we requested the bacon "extra-crispy" for my oldest and it came out medium with a little wiggle to it. Overall, the food was o.k. and the value was good. I would come again, though.

I had some amazing light and crispy waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. My co-diners got the stuffed French toast and the farmers omelette with some pancakes. Everything was delicious and service was great. We will definitely be coming back.

After hearing about how popular Manna's is, I knew I would have to be strategic about what time I stopped in. Coming in at 9am on Sunday morning, our server said we were smart to get in before the 'after church' crowd came which is when they get on a wait. I ordered their Sunday special, the strawberry stuffed french toast. My husband ordered the Manna Hash (eggs, smoked corned beef, and potatoes wedges), and my friend ordered the Cinnamon Toast. The servers kept our coffee filled while we waiting for our food to arrive. My strawberry toast was a burst of fresh, sweet berry jam-like filling, between two warm, moist sugary sweet slices of bread. Topped with whipped cream and syrup, it satisfied my sweet tooth. My husbands Manna Hash will probably be the next meal I order. After one bite, I feel in love with the savory, meaty flavor, not to mention, it was a large enough portion that we took some home. The restaurant offers a large, clean dining room with high ceilings and new tables and booths. The servers were friendly and helpful during our visit. As other reviews have said, Manna's is very clear about their evangelical beliefs - they sell devotional books and prominently display Bible verses on the wall. If you are comfortable with the religious element of the restaurant, the food is worth the visit.

Moving it up to a five. Second visit. The buttermilk pancakes ($3 each) are huge and creamy delicious. Manna hash delightful. I had a side of pulled pork as a breakfast side--you can get sweet or spicy. Spicy was good. Friend liked the huevos rancheros. Pork taco appetizer were a hit too. Terrific cinnamon roll. Coffee is great. Service good, food great. hard to find a bad thing to say about them.

Very good food in a nice, open, clean, and bright building. The menu has some very unique things. My wife got a stuffed french toast which was incredible. Usually stuffed french toast has a dense cream cheese filling, but this was some sort of berry compote that was just incredible. I had ordered a breakfast hash which was delicious. When I had ordered, I ordered poached eggs. The eggs came as a gelatinous mass with no runny yolk. My waitress noticed that I had segregated the egg mass from the rest of the food, and asked if I wanted replacements. I agreed, and within about three minutes, absolutely perfectly poached eggs were delivered. That was a testament to the wait staff, manager, and chefs, and certainly helped my opinion of the place. Everything was great except the "manna" potatoes which were flavorless. They have so much going on, not sure why the potatoes couldn't have some life. As a word of notice, there are bible verses painted on the wall and cover the menu. I generally find this tacky. Just a heads-up to those who could find this bothersome, that's all.

I tried this place today on a lark and to further my ever-extended quest to find a place that makes the perfect Reuben sandwich. The actual premises is very nice - incredibly clean, and almost feels like a fancy out-to-dinner place instead of a breakfast/lunch eatery. The food choices were good, and they offer a daily special. The Reuben didn't live up to my hopes, sadly, as the corned beef was oddly seasoned. The waffle-cut fries were quite tasty however. I'll try it again someday, and try some other food and will update my review then - but it stands as a first impression. The service was incredible - a young woman named Kenzie took great care of me and was humorous and friendly while still being attentive to myself and her other customers.

I love breakfasts! Most important meal of the day. Friendly service, all their breakfast items are delicious as always. Great Coffee too.

The food and the service was excellent. The Benedict was perfectly made and the best one I have had in town. My wife had the Manna Hash and could not have been happier. Prices are a bit higher than most breakfast choices in town but worth it but I am not sure that anyone else in town is making everything from scratch to the extent that Manna Café is.

Been there 4 times and 3 of those my eggs were undercooked! Sent them back and still runny when ordered over medium. Limited menu and no gluten free options. As a business owner in this area I was excited to have a new breakfast/lunch option. Very disappointed with Manna Cafe!

Breakfast was excellent and the coffee was also very high quality. 5 people in our party with 5 different breakfast choices. Everything we ordered was very high quality food with great presentation. I was visiting the area and you never know what kind of restaurant it is. This is a diamond.

Great food for breakfast or lunch in a nice open restaurant with lots of windows and natural sunlight. Great to come with friends or even a nice quiet brunch on your own. Love the Manna BLT with fried green tomatoes, and the sweet quinoa with cranberries, golden raisins, and pecans. Brunswick Stew is great if you love baked beans with bacon and sausage. Two for You menu has a chicken salad wrap that seemed full size and was very substantial with lots of creamy chicken and not overly sweet. Decaf coffee is okay, but they do a good job of keeping your cup filled. Service was fine but nothing I would race about. Next time I'll try the Stuffed French Toast (even though it looks a lot smaller and way different than Marie Catrib's which I love) and the Pork 3 ways looked amazing as well. Looking forward to coming back sometime with my family.

Good food most of the time, horrible service. Some servers care, some are oblivious. You have to request every item, attentive they are not. I do not recommend this place for anyone with any sense of urgency. Useless staff, too bad since the food is decent. Good luck!

I travel for a living and eat in more restaurants than I can count, and I'm not going to lie. This was the most amazing omelette I've had in my entire life. It was called a 3 way pork omelette, and had cheese, bacon, ham, and an incredible amount of juicy pulled pork inside. Their coffee was rich and came close to Starbucks, and I even ate the grainy manna bread. The restaurant is very bright and cheerful and clean too. I will be thanking the manager on my way out, and I will definitely be back every time I visit GR!

Great brunch place!!! Wonderful ambience. And the service was quick and attentive. We ordered the garden burger and the jerk Benedict. Both were delicious. The burger tasted really fresh. The Benedict sauce had a wonderful kick to it. Will visit again!

First time here after seeing a picture on the Eat GR Facebook site. We were very excited, and eat out and try new places very often. Our waitress had a rude arrogance about her from the get go. We didn't know they had any specials until after placing our order. My ordered coffee and asked for cream and sugar- the sugar I had to steal from another table. The food was mediocre at BEST. Not a good value in our opinion (and we are not cheap). She was out of coffee and did not get a refill until after we had enough time to complete our meals. It was a clean and fresh environment and that's the only reason I gave it two stars. We won't be back here. $30 breakfast was a bad choice from this place.

They totally rock. The food is great and the customer service is to. I came last week and the woman remembered me and remembered my jelly of choice. Small, maybe, but cool nonetheless! I would recommend the eggs any style. Get two and they'll give you a third for free. I tried the farmers omelette this time and it's a favorite!

Great decor; I appreciated the attention to detail. It was clear the flooring, color of the walls and ceilings and trim were all carefully chosen soothing pastel yellow and blue with white trim. The cutlery and the dishes were modern and things I would consider having in my own house; nothing here was tacky. It would be a good place to take family or friends out of town from larger/more real cities. Great layout for the tables not too crowded. I had the buckwheat waffles and sausage, and a cup of coffee. I thought the portion sizes of the waffles were a bit small; they were tasty though. I paid two dollars extra because I don't eat fake syrup- they have no business serving fake syrup at all. It is just colored corn syrup, gross. I will say that next time I will get the eggs benedict I saw them at the next table over; the waffles were good, but not anything to write home about. The sausage and coffee were up to part and in fact were something I would write home about. Side note: I have ethical concerns about eating there. There were quotes from the Bible in the entrance and above the dining area. One was an Old Testament quote about food in the entrance- I thought, eh ok that's a bit odd but maybe it's just a health food craze thing like Dr. Bronner's type stuff. Then the other quote above the dining area was directly about Jesus saying if you share in him you have eternal life. Would you feel comfortable bringing a Jewish friend here? A Buddhist? How about a secular friend who just doesn't want Jesus tatooed on a wall? I grew up in a devoutly Catholic family with the idea that your religious beliefs are PERSONAL and you don't wear that on your sleeve, especially not emblazoned on a wall. I might have to offset my visits with an equivalent donation to the ACLU or some such foundation every time I eat there from now on. They have EVERY right to their beliefs and I don't need to frequent their establishment but I find it unbecoming for them to plaster their beliefs on the wall in my face. I worry they might be fundamentalist Christians throwing their money to some rather unsavory causes. Their food however is quite savory indeed!

A coworker suggest this place and I had never been, so why not try something new. The place was spacious and had plenty of room to move around. I can't stand those places that pack the tables in that you feel claustrophobic. They had a pretty big brunch menu and a good size sandwich menu as well. I ordered the Cuban sandwich. The food came out in a reasonable time and the presentation was wonderful. The sandwich was just "meh", not bad, just a pork sandwich. The port was kinda dry and I would have liked a little more sauce to moisten the pork. It was good enough that I'd go back and try them again, because it did seem like they have potential, just maybe a miss on that sandwich.

Have now been here twice, while returning to Grand Rapids. Wish this had been here when I lived here! The chicken salad is perfect: filling, yet clean-tasting and delightfully understated. I love the decor and natural light. Very comfortable place to eat and enjoy meaningful conversation. And I applaud the owners for having the courage to include verses from scripture, especially since the verses are uplifting. Add good service on top of all this, and it's no wonder Manna Cafe is doing so well. Bravo!

Not impressed food was not hot and even after sending it back still came back warm if that. For what we spent not worth it should have stayed home and made breakfast for the family the $70.00 could have gone a long way at the store! We will not be back ! I had the B&G's.....take a trip down south get a clue!! Sent from my iPadq

Really like this place. The food is delicious, with rich, well-rounded flavor and gorgeous presentation. The servers are attentive and friendly. Our food arrived cold, but within minutes the situation was remedied. So, so good! Only downside is minor at most: the acoustics are terrible. A restaurant of this size shouldn't echo. Overall, great experience! Go today!

This is the just the kind of place that is needed in the area. On entering the cafe we were greeted with a friendly smile and were told there would be a short wait. I took that time to look around and check out the bakery display case. I was impressed by the decor. They had beautiful furnishings and attention to detail in the building right down to the colors, light fixtures and decorative ceiling. The bathrooms match any upscale restaurant in town. The service was friendly, very professional and well trained. Stephanie was our server and could not have been better. I got the Smoked Salmon Benedict and couldn't believe how wonderful it was. I could tell that it was fresh smoked fish instead of something bought smoked and frozen. The sauce was amazing and it is a must try for salmon lovers. I left there with some cinnamon rolls that Stephanie recommended that were made by their pastry chef. They were awesome! I took one home for my son and after eating it, he asked if they could make a big one for his birthday cake. I will be back to try it again soon. There was so much on the menu that I still want to try. Some friends have mentioned that the soups and Brunswick Stew are worth the trip.

I went to Manna Cafe with my dad on a Monday mid-morning. The restaurant was bright and clean, and the service was great. I had Garden Hash without cheese or eggs, and the waitress offered bread in place of the eggs. I had their Manna Bread, which was quite tasty. My dad had something with eggs, toast, meat, and potatoes, and thought it was very good. They had some yummy looking homemade chocolate eclairs in the case up front, but I resisted.

I've already clarified in other comments why it's good - Fresh, Local, and Awesome. Service was excellent as well! Look forward to getting back here. Only open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch (right now), so get there early and enjoy. Outdoor seating is limited but nice.

Probably the best turkey club sandwich I've ever had. The only down fall was that I had to pay $12.00 for it. I will definitely be back but not as often as I would like due to it being a little more pricey than I would like to pay.

We're desperate for a real breakfast place in Forest Hills, so I was eager to check out Manna Cafe once it opened. The layout inside is nice and clean, and the staff was friendly and attentive. My wife and I brought our 3 year old and infant, and felt comfortable there. My wife ordered eggs benedict and a coffee, and was pleased with both. My son had a yogurt & granola parfait, which kept him more than occupied for 15 minutes, and certainly earned his approval. I tried the biscuits and gravy with a side of "Manna toast," and left more than full Overall, the food and service met expectations. I'm going to be a little tough on the rating, because their a la carte and beverage pricing is way out of line. $2.75 for a 10oz (I'm guessing) coffee that was never refilled is ludicrous, as is $4.00 for a latte of the same size. They make Starbucks look budget friendly. $2 for a very small side of toast rubbed me the wrong way as well. $37 for a breakfast of reasonable proportions for two adults and a child is about $5-7 more than I'm willing to pay, and it mostly was due to beverage pricing.

holy sweet delicious pulled pork. try the brunswick stew. or if you are more adventurous the jamacian benedict has the stew sitting on a toasted english muffin with a perfectly poached egg. although the chocolate milk was kinda small I will say it said it was organic which is a plus i suppose. Besides the food the owner is super friendly along with his staff. Couldn't ask for a more pleasant place to enjoy a nice breakfast/lunch!! Thanks Mike!! you're the best! :)

Was in 3/6 for a late breakfast. Left 3/4 of the food on my plate and it was picked up by someone in a suit, like an owner or manager. Not even a question as to why. Would have said burnt is not my favorite flavor. Also watched a waitstaff stand on the counter to write on a chalkboard. The same counter where plates are stacked and the food comes from the kitchen. Not sure shoes that walked on the floor should go up there. Maybe attempt to wipe the counter after?
